GS Yuasa lithium-ion batteries power Michibiki No. 6 satellite, enhancing precise and reliable satellite positioning

Space-grade GS Yuasa lithium-ion batteries have been installed in the Quasi-Zenith Satellite No. 6 (Michibiki No. 6). This satellite, developed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and launched on 2 February 2025 from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Tanegashima Space Center, is a key component in Japan’s advanced satellite positioning system.

The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) operates in conjunction with the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) to provide highly accurate and dependable positioning services. This system ensures coverage even in challenging environments such as mountainous regions and dense urban areas, supporting applications ranging from autonomous vehicles and maritime navigation to logistics and infrastructure development.

GS Yuasa’s space-use lithium-ion batteries have powered more than 250 spacecraft worldwide since the early 2000s, demonstrating exceptional durability and performance in the extreme conditions of space. Their continued adoption, from Michibiki No. 1 through to Michibiki No. 6, underscores GS Yuasa’s position as a trusted leader in high reliability energy solutions.

Mike Taylor, General Manager – Technical & Compliance for GS Yuasa Battery Europe Ltd, commented: “GS Yuasa’s expertise in lithium-ion technology is helping to power some of the most advanced space missions in the world.
