Get Your Bike Ready For Summer

With a bit more spare time at home, why not get your bike ready for summer with our handy maintenance checklist.

Before you go out and jump on your bike, which has been sat patiently waiting in the garage, there are a few things you need to check to get everything in the best possible shape for when you get back on the road.

Before you start

Make sure your work area is clean and tidy, grab your battery charger, fetch the pressure washer and cleaning kit, line up your tools and make sure you’ve got plenty of lubrication products.

This webpage is intended as a guide only. Yuasa cannot be held responsible for any damage to person or property caused by following the information provided. Please consult your bike’s owner’s manual for manufacturer’s information. If you are not confident seek advice from an accredited industry professional.

Now you’re ready to begin waking your bike from its long winter hibernation.

Wash

Washing your bike is an important first step in getting it ready for the summer. Not only will it allow you to appreciate your machine in all its glory, but it also forces you to look at your bike from every possible angle. Keep an eye out for any loose bolts, rust or anything else that may need attention later on.

Of course, a thorough clean will also get rid of any grime or dirt you missed in the autumn!

Tyres

Now your bike is sparkling from its wash, have a good look at your tyres. Carefully check for any cracks in the sidewall, cuts and damage in the tread, other wear and tear or slow punctures. If you find anything wrong replace as required. Once you’re sure everything’s in order, check the pressure with a pressure gauge and adjust as necessary.

Wheels

Now that you know your rubber’s in order, inspect your rims and spokes. If you find damage or anything looks buckled or broken, it’s time to head to the dealer and buy new ones.

Brakes

Check your brake pads and discs to make sure that the thickness meets the stated requirements from your owners manual.  Damp and cold can actually corrode some pads and discs, so spend a few minutes inspecting them closely. When you’re sure they’re okay, check the brake fluid level and top up or replace if needs be. Finally, check that the brake light is working as it should. It’s worth bearing in mind that your brake fluid deteriorates and absorbs moisture over time. You should always stick to your bike’s service schedule with regards to brake fluid replacement.

Fluids

The winter cold will have kept your damping fluid on ice for the last few months which means it won’t work as well as it should straight away. If your bike has the provision for adjustments in the suspension set up, and you’re confident with what you’re doing, consider tweaking the suspension to account for the temperature conditions.

Lubricant

It’s time to get everything lubed up and ready for your first ride. Start by cleaning the chain and applying a good dose of lubricant. It’s also worth giving the clutch and throttle cables a good greasing.

Check your coolant and oil levels, if they look low top them up. A full oil change isn’t necessary, but if you didn’t do it before putting your bike into winter storage then it’s definitely a good idea. Again you should also make sure you keep to your bike’s service schedule with regards to coolant and oil maintenance.
